Mojo Rising: These Mets Are For Real
july 4 2004, 06:21 pm
I wrote that there are
no such things as curses in baseball
a few months back, that is true. But there are two things that do exist – mojo and jinxes. The Mets have their mojo back, and I don’t want to get too high on them because I will jinx them.
Lady luck, a swagger, a bounce... these Mets have it.
For the first time in about 4 years, as a Mets fan I can hold my head high. Here on the 4th of July, here they are, my Metropolitans, 2 games over .500 and 2 games out of first. Hot on the heels of a nerve-wracking 3-game sweep of the hated Yankees, we cruise into Philly with an edge. Some moxie. Mojo.
I love this team. I love this group more than their 2000 National League champion team, and they are creeping up on the 85-86 squad as one of the more fun to watch teams. I loved this team at the home opener, Zeile sliding headfirst into home, Looper locking it up in the ninth. I loved this tem in early May when Piazza took the Giants deep in extra innings after Leiter pitched both of his asses off. I loved this team sweeping the Phillies, beating The Big Unit, Clemens and Oswalt all on the same trip. We’ve got players out of position, cast-offs, has-beens and never-will-be’s. We have a milquetoast manager showing emotion for the first time in years, a team leader who’s sacrificed for the greater good by moving to first, a Japanese import suddenly infused with new energy thanks to the bright-light spectacle that was the Subway Series. We’ve got a decent pen, three front-line starters (2 crafty lefties on the verge of 39 years old pitching 10 years younger) and a lights-out closer.
Mojo. We got it.
Yankee fans: you have the better team. You’ll go farther than we will this year. But our team is more fun to watch, our team has more heart. And for once, since interleague started in ’97, we have the bragging rights. So go ahead, drop to your knees…
Reyes is back and any day now he’s gonna explode. Matsui has busted out of his shell in a big way. Hidalgo is reborn since leaving Houston, no longer obsessed with pulling everything like he did with that short porch in left at Minute Maid Park. Piazza is fresh and loose over at first, a healthy Floyd behind him in the order helps. Cameron is struggling, but has delivered in key spots. Ty Wigginton, playing in the shadow of AAA phenom David Wright, is making it real hard for the Mets brass to make a move. He needs to stick around; he’s handy, gritty, gutty. A Gamer. Phillips plays with fire and class. Garcia and Spencer fall back into place as key bench players, joining an out-of-his-head Valent, Todd Zeile on his ‘farewell’ tour, the perennially frustrating Joe McEwing. Deepest bench in the NL.
Glavine is aces; Leiter is pitching on fumes and coming up big. On again, off again Steve Trachsel will continue to confound but I have faith. Franco has turned back the clock and Looper is dominant. Their staff has the best ERA in the majors. It’s a good staff.
A team of good guys, characters. Dare I say it… winners?
Look, I know we’re one more starting pitcher away from really being in the hunt. I know that we need all the bounces to go our way from here on out. Doesn’t matter. This is my team, thick and thin. Let me enjoy this summer, it’s off to a great start. I just don’t want to jinx it.
See you in October!

September is probably more likely, but they'd have to win the division, not a chance for the wild card. I don't know. I just wish they could put it all together on a regular basis.
A mighty fine article, Norm!

Mike Stanton needs to go, though. Seriously - fuck him.

Or Glavine, giving up six runs.

The Mets are good this year but i have some news for you. Kaz is a bust. admit or stay in denial, your choice. The mets will never be any better than the hole they have at short.
